August 22, Year 1 | A very strange little creature welcomed me to this new universe. It so far has proven somewhat odd, though in no way aggressive. It hid from me upon release from its pokéball, leading me on a chase around the outskirts of New Bark Town before eventually throwing a stick at me when I attempted to entice it out with a game of fetch. I believe it was only attempting to accept my invitation to play; in fact, I believe it had been playing from the beginning, perhaps in order to gauge how I would react and what sort of person I am. It physically resembles a stereotypical extraterrestrial (from an Earth-native human perspective) with the addition of a small pointed tail. The six digits that serve as its fingers are capable of illumination; I can only assume this display has some meaning, though what that meaning is I could not begin to guess as of yet. As this creature is to be my traveling companion, I will have ample time to observe it and record my theories.
August 23, Year 1 | I have chosen to name her Eleanor, as the sound she is most capable of producing is 'el'. As it has been explained to me, Pokémon speak only their species name or a similar sound. This brings up the question of whether Pokémon are named after the sound they produce (which does not explain some Pokémon who only roar or growl) or if they learn to parrot the name given to them by humans as part of the deeply symbiotic relationship the two species share. I have also heard that Psychic-types may communicate with their trainers via telepathy; either she has not attempted to do so or I have not heard her attempts. I fear my metal plate may be blocking them out, but I will leave time for more of a bond to grow between us before making assumptions.
September 13, Year 1 | Today I heard a definite mental response for the first time when speaking to her. It was distant and distorted, but I am absolutely certain it was an attempt at psychic communication. I should think I've heard enough voices inside my own head to know one when I hear one. Either she is learning to work around my metal plate or our bond is growing stronger; perhaps it is a little of column A and a little of column B.
October 1, Year 1 | After weeks of practice we have succeeded in having a full conversation without fading or distortion. Her 'voice' is soft and fairly high in pitch and reminds me of nothing so much as the voice one might hear narrating one of those hokey old new age healing tapes my mother used to hawk. In her favor, she is far more logical and worth listening to. In fact she has proven incredibly opinionated, and her first point of contention was the name that I chose for her. 'Eleanor' was not to her taste and we spent quite some time running through potential alternatives before she settled on my suggestion of 'Roswell'. I think the explanation behind its meaning and specifically the association with extraterrestrials amused her.
October 29, Year 1 | At long last, Roswell has evolved! Her new form retains much of the visual language of her old one, with the addition of a larger cranium, a green goggle-like covering over her eyes, and what appears to be an organic coat. It does not escape me that we match, to an extent. With her levels she has also gained some level of maturity; I wonder if Pokémon mature with their level regardless of their chronological age, or if it's a mix of both? Perhaps they call it 'experience' for a reason...
March 13, Year 1 | Today Roswell reached what is referred to as level one hundred. That is, she has now accrued as much experience as it is possible for her to have in terms of stored energy. This is something I am still studying and developing theories on, but as I continue to train my Pokémon and more of them reach this plateau I will be able to more accurately understand what it entails.
August 17, Year 1 | After almost a year of travel together I am retiring Roswell to the PC. Not permanently, of course, but we discussed it and Claudia will be more helpful to me on the Seafoam Islands as I search for Lugia. For her part, Roswell seems excited to have a vacation!
